To remove the sound from a video, open Mute Video, add the video, and press Remove the sound. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so it takes seconds even for large files and the quality is identical. An MP4 stays MP4, a MOV stays MOV, a WebM stays WebM. Download the silent video.

Mute a video step by step

  1. Open Mute Video.
  2. Add the video — MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV — by clicking, dropping or pasting it, or paste a direct link.
  3. Press Remove the sound.
  4. Play the silent result and download it.

Why remove the sound?

  • Background chatter, wind or traffic you'd rather nobody heard.
  • Copyrighted music playing in the background, which can get a video muted or blocked on social platforms.
  • A new soundtrack — mute first, then add music or a voice-over.
  • Silent loops for websites, displays and presentations, where sound would be intrusive.
  • Privacy — conversations recorded by accident.

Replace the sound instead

If you want different sound rather than none, skip muting: Add Audio to Video can replace the original sound with music or a voice-over in one step — or mix the music in with the original turned down.

Turn it down, not off

To keep the sound but quieter, use Change Video Volume and choose 25%, 50% or 75%.

Keep the sound separately

Want both a silent video and the audio on its own? First save the sound with Extract Audio (MP3, M4A or WAV), then mute the video.

Silent videos on websites

Autoplaying videos on websites must usually be muted — browsers block autoplay with sound. A file with no sound track at all is also smaller, and some page builders treat it as a background video automatically. Mute the clip, then compress it with Compress Video for a fast-loading background.

Muting on your phone

  • iPhone: in Photos, open the video, tap Edit, and tap the speaker icon in the top-left to turn the sound off. Tap Done.
  • Android: many gallery apps (including Google Photos) have a mute or sound option in the video editor.

The browser tool is handy when the phone's own option isn't there, on a computer, or when you need the file to stay in its original format. It also gives you a file with no sound track at all, rather than a phone edit that keeps the original sound and can be undone.

Why it's so fast

A video file holds separate streams for picture and sound. Muting simply copies the picture stream into a new file and leaves out the sound — nothing is decoded or re-encoded. That's why it takes seconds, and why the quality can't change.

Muting for social media

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok let you mute the original sound while posting and add music from their library — that's often the easiest way when posting. Muting the file first is better when you want the clean video for several platforms, or the app's music library isn't available for your account type.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser with ffmpeg (WebAssembly); your video isn't uploaded, and there's no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

Will the video quality change?

No. The picture is copied exactly; only the sound track is removed.

Can I mute only part of a video?

Not in this tool. Split the video with the Video Splitter, mute the part you want, and join the pieces with the Video Merger.

What if my video already has no sound?

The tool tells you — the copy it makes is identical to the original.
