To crop a GIF, open the GIF Cropper, add the GIF, and drag the box over the part you want — drag its corners to resize it. Choose a Shape such as 1:1 for a square, or type the exact Left, Top, Width and Height in pixels. Check a few frames with the slider, press Crop GIF, and download it.
Crop a GIF step by step
- Open the GIF Cropper.
- Add the GIF — or paste a direct link to one.
- Choose a Shape: Free, 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3 or 4:5. The box jumps to the largest centred area of that shape.
- Drag the box to move it, and drag a corner to resize it (the shape stays locked unless you chose Free).
- For precision, type Left (px), Top (px), Width (px) and Height (px).
- Move the Frame slider to check other moments — the subject may move out of the box.
- Press Crop GIF and download the result.
Why crop a GIF?
- Remove black bars from GIFs made from widescreen video.
- Cut off captions or watermarks at the edges (respect the creator — don't strip credits you're not entitled to remove).
- Zoom in on the action — the face in a reaction GIF, the important part of a screen recording.
- Make it square for profile pictures, Discord emojis and Instagram-style posts.
- Make it vertical (9:16) for Stories.
- Smaller files — fewer pixels means a smaller GIF.
Cropping moving subjects
The crop box stays in one place for the whole animation. Before cropping:
- Slide through the frames and watch where the subject goes.
- Make the box large enough to cover the whole movement.
- If the subject crosses the frame, consider not cropping so tightly — or use a wider shape.
Square crops for emojis and avatars
Choose 1:1, move the box over the face or subject, and crop. Then resize to 128×128 with the GIF Resizer — or let the Emoji GIF Maker do both and get it under Discord's 256 KB limit.
Removing black bars
GIFs made from widescreen videos often have black bars at the top and bottom (or the sides). Choose Free, then drag the top edge down and the bottom edge up until the bars disappear — or type Top and Height values that skip them. Check the first and last frames: bars are sometimes a pixel or two thicker in parts of a video.
Exact pixel values
Typing values is useful when you need a precise size (for an ad slot or a forum signature) or to match a crop across several GIFs:
- Left and Top move the box; if it no longer fits, it shrinks to fit.
- Width and Height resize it; with a fixed shape, changing one changes the other.
What's preserved
Pixels are copied exactly — no blurring — and every frame keeps its delay and transparency. Cropping also makes the file smaller. If it's still too big, the GIF Compressor can get it under a size limit.
Privacy
The GIF is cropped in your browser and never uploaded. No watermark.
Frequently asked questions
Can I crop a GIF into a circle?
GIF frames are always rectangles. For a round look, the Spin & Shake GIF Maker has a Round crop option that makes the corners transparent.
Can I crop different areas on different frames?
No — one area for the whole GIF, which keeps the animation stable.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Drag the box with your finger, or type the values.
