Compress a GIF

Get a GIF under an upload limit — 256 KB for a Discord emoji, 10 MB for a Discord upload, a few MB for a website — or simply make it load faster.

How to compress a GIF

  1. Add the GIF, or paste a direct link to one.
  2. Choose Get it under a size and pick a limit (or type any size in KB) — the tool tries the gentlest settings first and stops as soon as the GIF fits.
  3. Or choose Choose settings and set the colours, which frames to keep and the size yourself.
  4. Press Compress GIF; the result shows the new size and what was changed. Download it.

What makes a GIF smaller

  • Size: 75% of the width is about half the pixels.
  • Colours: 64 or 32 colours are fine for cartoons, text and screen recordings; photos need more.
  • Frames: keeping every 2nd frame halves them while the GIF still plays at the same speed.
  • Shorter is always smaller — trim it with Cut GIF. For the smallest file of all, convert it to video with GIF to MP4.

Your GIF never leaves your device: it is decoded and rebuilt in your browser.
