To compress a GIF, open the GIF Compressor, add the GIF, keep Get it under a size selected, and pick a limit โ 256 KB (Discord emoji), 1 MB, 10 MB (Discord upload) and more โ or type any size in KB. Press Compress GIF: the tool tries the gentlest settings first and stops as soon as the GIF fits, then tells you what it changed.
Compress a GIF step by step
- Open the GIF Compressor.
- Add the GIF โ or paste a direct link to one.
- Choose How:
- Get it under a size โ pick a preset or type a size in KB.
- Choose settings โ pick Colours, Frames (keep all, every 2nd, every 3rd) and Size (100%, 75%, 50%) yourself.
- Press Compress GIF.
- Read the result: the old and new size, how much smaller it is, and what changed (for example "75% size, 64 colours, every 2nd frame").
- Download the GIF.
What makes a GIF smaller
GIFs grow with three things: the number of pixels, the number of frames and the number of colours. The compressor reduces them in that order of gentleness:
- Colours: 256 โ 128 โ 64. Photos show it first; cartoons, text and screen recordings barely change.
- Frames: keeping every 2nd frame halves the frames. The GIF plays at the same speed, slightly less smoothly.
- Size: 75% of the width is about half the pixels; 50% is a quarter.
Common size limits
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| Discord emoji | 256 KB |
| Discord sticker | 512 KB |
| Slack emoji | 128 KB |
| Email (comfortable) | about 1 MB |
| Discord upload (free) | 10 MB |
| Many forums | 1โ5 MB |
The biggest savings come before compressing
- Trim it. Half the frames is half the file โ cut the dull start and end with Cut GIF.
- Crop it. Remove empty space and black bars with the GIF Cropper.
- Resize it. Make it the size it will actually be shown with the GIF Resizer.
When the GIF won't get small enough
If even the strongest setting can't reach the limit, the tool says so. Long, large or busy GIFs (video clips, confetti, noise) are hard to shrink. Options:
- Trim harder, or choose a bigger limit.
- Use video instead. An MP4 of the same clip is often 10โ20ร smaller. Many platforms (Instagram, X, Slack) play short MP4s like GIFs โ convert with GIF to MP4.
- For websites, animated WebP is typically 30โ70% smaller than GIF with full colour โ use GIF to WebP.
Manual settings for specific content
- Screen recordings and UI demos: 64 colours, every frame kept โ text stays sharp, the file shrinks a lot.
- Cartoons and flat animation: 32โ64 colours.
- Photos and video clips: keep 128โ256 colours and reduce the size or frames instead.
Why GIFs are big in the first place
GIF dates from 1987: it compresses with a simple method (LZW) and can show only 256 colours per frame. Modern video codecs are vastly more efficient. That's why the same clip can be 5 MB as a GIF and 300 KB as an MP4.
Privacy
Compression happens in your browser โ your GIF is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Will compressing ruin the quality?
The tool tries the least visible changes first, and stops as soon as the GIF fits. For limits far below the original size, some loss is unavoidable.
Why didn't my GIF get smaller?
It was already optimised. Choose a smaller size or fewer frames, or convert to MP4 or WebP.
Is transparency kept?
Yes โ transparent areas stay transparent.
