To make an animated Discord emoji, open the Emoji GIF Maker, add a GIF, video or picture, and choose For: Discord emoji — 128×128, under 256 KB. Choose Fill (crop) or Fit (pad) to make it square, then press Make emoji. The tool tries fewer colours and fewer frames until the file fits Discord's limit, then shows how it looks at chat size. Download it and upload it to your server.
Make the emoji step by step
- Open the Emoji GIF Maker.
- Add a GIF, an animated WebP/PNG, a picture or a video.
- For a video: choose where the clip starts (three seconds are used) and press Use this clip.
- Under For, choose Discord emoji — or Discord sticker, Slack emoji, Twitch emote or Custom size and limit.
- Choose the Square: Fill (crop) cuts the middle out; Fit (pad) keeps the whole picture with transparent space around it.
- Press Make emoji. The result says whether it fits — and what was reduced to get there.
- Download it.
Upload it to Discord
- Open Server Settings › Emoji (you need the Manage Expressions permission).
- Click Upload Emoji and choose the GIF.
- Give it a name — that's what people type between colons, like
.
Every server has a number of animated emoji slots, which increase with server boosts. Anyone in the server can see animated emojis, but using them requires Discord Nitro.

| Slack emoji | 128×128 | 128 KB |
| Twitch emote | 112×112 | 1 MB |
Twitch creates the smaller emote sizes from the 112×112 upload.
Tips for emojis that read at tiny sizes
Emojis are shown at about 22–48 pixels in chat — far smaller than you design them.
- One clear subject — a face, a hand, an object. Busy scenes turn to mush.
- Bold movement — a big nod or shake reads better than subtle motion.
- Short loops — one to two seconds; fewer frames also help the size limit.
- Transparent backgrounds look native in both light and dark themes. Remove a background with the Transparent GIF Maker first.
- Crop tightly to the subject with the GIF Cropper before making the emoji.
Make an emoji from a still picture
A still image becomes a one-frame emoji. To animate it — spin, shake, pulse, bounce — use the Spin & Shake GIF Maker at 128×128, then run the result through the Emoji GIF Maker to check the limit.
How the size limit is met
The tool encodes the emoji and checks its size. If it's too big, it tries again with fewer colours (128, 64, 32…) and then by keeping every 2nd, 3rd or 4th frame — which keeps the speed the same but makes the motion slightly choppier. It stops at the first version that fits and tells you what it changed. If even the smallest version is over the limit, it says so: trim the clip or choose Fill for a simpler picture.
