Convert videos between formats

Change a video’s format for a particular app, editor, website or player. Every output uses codecs that format is known for, so the file plays where you need it.

The formats

  • MP4 — H.264 + AAC. Plays everywhere; the safe choice.
  • MOV — H.264 + AAC. For Apple apps such as iMovie and Final Cut, and for editors.
  • MKV — H.264 + AAC. For media players such as VLC and Plex.
  • WebM — VP8 + Vorbis. An open format for websites.
  • AVI — MPEG-4 (Xvid) + MP3. For old DVD players, TVs and software.
  • FLV — H.264 + AAC. Legacy Flash video, for old systems that still require it.

How to convert

  1. Add a video, or paste a direct link to one.
  2. Choose the format to Convert to and the Quality.
  3. Press Convert and download the file.

Good to know

  • When the video already uses codecs the new format holds — H.264 into MP4, MOV, MKV or FLV, or VP8/VP9 into WebM — it is repackaged without re-encoding: identical quality, in seconds.
  • Otherwise it is converted, which takes longer; WebM encoding is the slowest.
  • Just need MP4? Convert to MP4 is the same engine with one choice fewer. For sound only, use the Audio Converter.

Everything is processed in your browser with ffmpeg (WebAssembly): your video is never uploaded.
