How to Make a GIF Background Transparent

Remove the white or coloured background from an animated GIF — or turn a PNG or JPG into a transparent GIF: click the colour, set the tolerance, save. Free.

To make a GIF's background transparent, open the Transparent GIF Maker, add the GIF, and click the background in the preview to pick the Colour to remove. Keep Remove: Background only so the same colour inside your subject isn't touched, adjust the Tolerance until the background is clean, and press Make transparent GIF.

Make a background transparent step by step

  1. Open the Transparent GIF Maker.
  2. Add the GIF — or a still PNG or JPG to turn into a transparent GIF.
  3. Click the background in the preview to pick the colour (or choose it with the Colour to remove picker).
  4. Choose what to Remove:
    • Background only — removes the colour only where it connects to the edges, so white eyes, teeth or highlights inside the subject stay.
    • Everywhere — removes that colour throughout the picture.
  5. Adjust the Tolerance: raise it to catch near-matching shades (soft edges, compression noise); lower it if parts of the subject disappear.
  6. Press Make transparent GIF and download it. The checkerboard shows the transparent areas.

Getting clean edges

GIF transparency is all-or-nothing: each pixel is either fully visible or fully transparent — there are no soft, semi-transparent edges. That means:

  • Edges keep a thin rim of the old background colour, especially around curves. It's invisible on a background of a similar colour.
  • Choose where it will be shown: a GIF made from a white background looks best on light pages; a dark one on dark pages.
  • Higher tolerance eats into soft edges and reduces the rim, but too high starts removing the subject.

Which backgrounds work best?

  • Solid, flat colours — a green screen, a plain white or black background, a cartoon's flat fill — work beautifully.
  • Gradients and photos don't: there's no single colour to remove. For photos, cut the subject out with the Background Remover first (it works on still images), then animate it.

Picking the right colour

Click directly on the background in the preview — not on an edge — to pick its exact colour. If the background has slight variations (JPEG noise, a subtle gradient), start with a moderate Tolerance and raise it gradually while watching the checkerboard appear. Stop as soon as the background is gone; going further starts eating the subject.

Ideas

  • Stickers and emotes — remove the box around a character so it sits naturally in chat. Then size it with the Emoji GIF Maker.
  • Logos for websites and email signatures.
  • Overlays for streams and videos.
  • Spinning or bouncing objects — make a still logo transparent here, then animate it with the Spin & Shake GIF Maker.

When it's still not transparent somewhere

  • A patch of background inside the subject (like the gap between an arm and the body) isn't connected to the edges, so Background only leaves it. Switch to Everywhere if the subject doesn't contain that colour.
  • JPG artefacts around edges: raise the tolerance a little.
  • The background changes colour between frames: pick the most common shade and raise the tolerance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make only part of the background transparent?

Use Background only — it removes just the areas connected to the edges.

Why do the edges look jagged on dark backgrounds?

GIF can't do soft transparency. Make a version with a darker colour removed, or use animated WebP or APNG for smooth edges.

Can I convert a transparent PNG to a transparent GIF?

Yes — add the PNG and its existing transparency is kept.
