How to Fix a Mirrored Selfie Video (Flip It Back)
Text reads backwards in your front-camera video? Flip it horizontally so writing, logos and signs read the right way — free, in your browser, no app needed.

If writing in your video reads backwards — a T-shirt, a sign, a whiteboard — the picture is mirrored. Open Flip Video, add the video, keep Horizontally (mirror) selected, check the preview, and press Flip video. Download the MP4 and the text reads the right way round.
Flip a video step by step
- Open Flip Video.
- Add the video — MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV — or paste a direct link to a video file.
- Choose Horizontally (mirror). The preview flips immediately so you can check the text.
- Press Flip video, wait for it to finish, and download the MP4.
Why selfie videos look mirrored
Front cameras show you a mirrored preview, because that's how you're used to seeing yourself in a mirror. What gets saved varies:
- Some apps save the video mirrored, exactly like the preview — so any writing is back to front.
- Others save it un-mirrored, as other people see you — which looks "wrong" to you because your parting is on the other side, even though text reads correctly.
Either way, flipping horizontally swaps between the two. If text reads backwards, flip it. If the text is fine but the video feels odd, you're just seeing yourself as others do — leave it.
Prevent it next time
- iPhone: Settings › Camera › Mirror Front Camera controls whether front-camera shots are saved as the mirror image you see in the preview.
- Android: many camera apps have a similar setting, often called Save selfies as previewed or Mirror front camera, in the camera's settings.
- Social apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok have their own behaviour; check the clip before posting.
Check before you flip
Before flipping a whole video, make sure it's really mirrored:
- Find something with writing in the shot — a sign, a label, a T-shirt, a book cover.
- If the letters read backwards, it's mirrored: flip it.
- If there's no writing, look for a known detail: a wedding ring on the wrong hand, a watch on the wrong wrist, a parting on the other side.
If nothing gives it away, nobody else will notice either — leave it as it is.
Other flips
- Vertically (upside down) mirrors the picture top to bottom. Note that this is not the same as rotating 180°: a vertical flip also leaves left and right swapped. If a video is simply upside down, use Rotate Video and choose 180°.
- Both flips horizontally and vertically — which, as it happens, equals a 180° rotation.
Creative uses
- Continuity: make a person face the other way so two clips cut together naturally.
- Symmetry effects: combine a clip with its mirror image in an editor.
- Teleprompter-style footage: some mirror rigs record reversed images that need flipping back.
After flipping
Add a caption or title with Add Text to Video — do it after flipping, or the text would be mirrored too.
Quality and privacy
The flipped video is re-encoded as an MP4 (H.264 and AAC) at high quality, and the sound isn't changed. Everything runs in your browser with ffmpeg (WebAssembly): the video isn't uploaded, and there's no watermark.
Frequently asked questions
Does flipping change the sound?
No. Only the picture is mirrored; left and right audio channels stay as they were.
Can I flip just part of a video?
Cut out that part with the Video Cutter, flip it, and join the pieces again with the Video Merger.
Will it work on my phone?
Yes, in Safari or Chrome. Choose the video from your photo library; short clips are quickest.
