Convert a video to a GIF

Turn the best few seconds of a video into an animated GIF that plays anywhere a picture can: chats, emails, forums, slides and documentation — no play button needed.

How to make a GIF from a video

  1. Add a video — MP4, WebM or MOV — or paste a direct link to one.
  2. Play it, pause where the GIF should begin and press Use current position (or type the start time).
  3. Choose the Length (up to 20 seconds), the Frames per second and the Width.
  4. Press Make GIF, check the result and download it.

Tips for a small, sharp GIF

  • GIFs grow fast: 2–5 seconds at 10 frames a second and 480 pixels wide is a good default.
  • Tick Separate colours for each frame when the scene changes a lot; turn on Dithering for skies and skin.
  • Too big? Shrink it with the GIF Compressor; add a caption with Add Text to GIF.
  • Need full colour and a smaller file? Video to Animated Image makes WebP and APNG animations.

Your video stays on your device: frames are taken from it by your browser, and the GIF is built there too.
