Make an area chart online

An area chart is a line chart with the space underneath filled in. It shows how a total changes over time — revenue, website visits, energy use — and, stacked, what that total is made of.

How to make an area chart

  1. Paste or type your data: a label (month, year, week) in the first column and one column per series. The first row can name the series. Copy straight from Excel or Google Sheets.
  2. For several series, choose Stacked (each series sits on the one below, so the top edge is the total), 100% stacked (each series as a share of the total) or Overlapping (every series from zero, see-through).
  3. Choose smooth or straight edges and the fill opacity, and add axis titles and a prefix or suffix.
  4. Set the title, colours and size, then download a PNG, JPG or SVG, or copy the image.

Tips

  • Areas start at zero, so their size is honest; put time on the horizontal axis.
  • In stacked charts, put the steadiest series first (at the bottom) so the others are easier to read.
  • Overlapping areas work for two or three series; with more, stacked areas or the Line Chart Maker are clearer.
  • In overlapping charts an empty cell leaves a gap; in stacked charts it counts as zero.

Your data stays in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
