Make a radar (spider) chart

A radar chart — also called a spider or web chart — puts several measures on spokes around a centre and joins each subject’s scores into a shape. It shows strengths and weaknesses at a glance and makes two or three profiles easy to compare.

How to make a radar chart

  1. Paste or type a table: one row per measure (the spokes) and one column per person, product or team, with their names in the first row.
  2. Leave the Scale maximum automatic, or set it yourself — 5 for ratings out of 5, 100 for percentages.
  3. Choose a polygon (web) or circular grid, the number of rings, the fill opacity, and whether to show points and values.
  4. Set the title, colours and size, then download a PNG, JPG or SVG, or copy the image.

Tips

  • Use five to eight measures on the same scale; very different scales make the shape meaningless.
  • Two or three series are easy to compare; for more, small multiples or a bar chart read better.
  • Shapes exaggerate differences — the area grows with the square of the scores — so keep the numbers in view with Show values when precision matters.
