YouTube Thumbnail Size (1280 × 720) and How to Make One
The right YouTube thumbnail size, shape and file limit — and how to turn any photo or video frame into a sharp 1280 × 720 thumbnail with text that stands out.

A YouTube thumbnail should be 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, and under 2 MB as a JPG, PNG or GIF. To make one from any photo, open the Social Media Image Resizer, add the image, tick YouTube · Thumbnail, choose how to fit it, and download a 1280 × 720 image ready to upload.

Custom thumbnails are available once your YouTube account is verified (YouTube asks for a phone number). Until then, YouTube offers three automatically chosen frames from your video.
Make a thumbnail step by step
- Pick the image. A strong frame from the video works well — grab one in full quality with Video Screenshot by entering its timestamp. A photo or a designed image works too.
- Resize it. Open the Social Media Image Resizer, add the image, and tick YouTube · Thumbnail. Choose Crop to fill and click the photo to keep the important part in view, or Fit · blurred to keep the whole picture.
- Add a title. Open the 1280 × 720 result in Add Text to Image and add a few big words.
- Check the file size. If it's over 2 MB, compress it with the Image Compressor — thumbnails look the same at a fraction of the size.
- Upload it in YouTube Studio under the video's details.
What makes a thumbnail work
Thumbnails are mostly seen small — in search results, suggestions and on phones — so design for a matchbox-sized view:
- One clear subject. A face with a clear expression, or one object, reads instantly.
- Three to five words maximum, in a big, bold font. The title is right next to the thumbnail; don't repeat it.
- High contrast. Bright subject, darker or simpler background; text with an outline or a shadow.
- Leave the bottom-right corner clear. YouTube puts the video length there.
- Consistent style across your videos so viewers recognise your channel.
Test it: shrink your thumbnail to about 200 pixels wide. If you can't tell what it is or read the words, simplify.
Thumbnails and titles together
The thumbnail and the title work as a pair: the image creates curiosity and the title explains. For title ideas, a description with chapters and tags, try the AI YouTube Title & Description Generator.
Common problems
"The thumbnail looks blurry"
The source was too small, or it was enlarged from a low-resolution frame. Start from the original video file rather than a screen recording of it, and use at least a 1280-pixel-wide image.
"Part of my thumbnail is cut off"
The image wasn't 16:9. Resize it to exactly 1280 × 720 with Crop to fill and position the crop, so YouTube doesn't need to crop it.
"It says the file is too big"
Thumbnails must be under 2 MB. Save as JPG or run it through the Image Compressor.
Channel banner and other sizes
The same resizer includes the YouTube Channel banner (2560 × 1440) — keep text and logos in the centre, because TVs show the whole banner while phones show only a strip from the middle.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a GIF as a thumbnail?
YouTube accepts GIF files, but only shows the first frame — thumbnails don't animate.
Is my image uploaded to iPixHub?
No. Resizing, adding text and compressing all happen in your browser.
