How to Reduce Video File Size Without Losing Quality
Five ways to shrink a video file, from the biggest win (lower resolution) to the smallest, and a free tool that compresses with H.264 in your browser.

To make a video file smaller, open Compress Video, add the video, choose Balanced compression, and β for the biggest saving β pick a lower Resolution such as 720p. Press Compress video; the result shows exactly how much smaller it is. Phone videos often shrink by 70β90% with no difference you'd notice on a phone screen.
Compress a video step by step
- Open Compress Video.
- Add the video β MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV β or paste a direct link to one.
- Choose the Compression:
- Light β best quality for a modest saving.
- Balanced for the usual sweet spot.
- Strong β smallest file when size matters most.
- Choose the Resolution: Keep it, or a smaller size (only sizes below your video's are offered).
- Press Compress video, compare the sizes shown, and download the MP4.
Why phone videos are so big
Phones record at high bitrates so they can capture fast motion in any light β often 15β50 MB per minute for 1080p, and much more for 4K. Most of that data is overkill for watching on a screen. Re-encoding with H.264 at a sensible quality removes the waste.
Five ways to shrink a video, biggest win first
- Lower the resolution. 4K β 1080p cuts the pixels by three-quarters; 1080p β 720p by more than half. On phones and laptops, 720p looks sharp.
- Cut what you don't need. Ten seconds of video you didn't need is ten seconds of file. Trim with the Video Cutter.
- Compress more strongly. Each step up in strength trades a little detail for a smaller file; Strong is fine for screen recordings and talking heads.
- Remove the sound if it isn't needed β Mute Video drops it without touching the picture.
- Keep the camera steady. Calm footage compresses far better than shaky, fast-moving footage, so a tripod or a steady hand means smaller files at the same quality.
Combining the first two β trimming and a lower resolution β usually does more than any amount of extra compression, and keeps the picture clean.
Need a specific size?
For a hard limit β 10 MB for Discord, 16 MB for WhatsApp, 25 MB for email β use Compress Video to Size instead. You pick the target; it calculates everything else.
When compression doesn't help
Some videos are already efficiently compressed β downloaded from a streaming site, exported from an editor, or recorded in HEVC on a recent iPhone. Re-compressing them may barely shrink the file, or even make it bigger. The tool tells you when that happens, so you can keep the original β or lower the resolution, which still helps.
What "without losing quality" really means
Any compression throws some information away; the goal is to remove what you can't see. At Light or Balanced, at a resolution that suits the screen it will be watched on, the difference is invisible in normal viewing. Keep your original if you might want to edit or print stills from it later.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser using ffmpeg (WebAssembly); your video isn't uploaded. The first use downloads the engine (about 30 MB) once. No watermark.
Frequently asked questions
How long does compressing take?
Roughly as long as the video, or longer for 4K and on phones β every frame is re-encoded on your device.
What format is the result?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on every device and uploads anywhere.
Can I compress several videos at once?
One at a time. Each takes your device's full attention while it encodes.
