To convert a GIF to MP4, open GIF to MP4, add the GIF, choose how many times to Play the GIF (once, or repeated up to 10 times), and what goes Behind transparent areas — white or black. Press Convert to MP4 and download the video. It's usually a fraction of the GIF's size and plays on every phone and platform.
Convert a GIF to MP4 step by step
- Open GIF to MP4.
- Add the GIF — or paste a direct link to one.
- Choose Play the GIF: Once, 2 times, 3 times, 5 times or 10 times.
- Choose what goes Behind transparent areas: White or Black.
- Press Convert to MP4, watch the result, and download it.
Why convert GIFs to video?
- Much smaller files. Video codecs are vastly more efficient: a 5 MB GIF often becomes a 200–500 KB MP4.
- Platforms want video. Instagram posts and Reels, TikTok, WhatsApp Status and YouTube Shorts accept video, not GIF files.
- Presentations and editors. PowerPoint, Keynote and video editors handle MP4 more reliably than GIF.
- Add sound. A GIF can't have audio; an MP4 can — add music with Add Audio to Video.
Why repeat the GIF?
GIFs loop forever on their own; videos usually play once (unless the platform loops them, as Instagram and TikTok do). A 2-second GIF becomes a 2-second video that's over in a blink — and some platforms have a minimum length (often 3 seconds or more). Repeating it 3–5 times makes a video that feels like the GIF. For longer loops (a minute, ten minutes), convert once and then use Loop Video.
Transparency becomes a background
Videos can't be transparent, so see-through areas of the GIF are filled with the colour you choose. White suits most light designs; black suits dark ones and night-mode apps.
Quality and format
The MP4 uses H.264 at a steady 30 frames per second, with each GIF frame shown for its original time. Dimensions are rounded to even numbers (a video requirement), so a 301-pixel-wide GIF becomes 300 pixels wide. There's no sound track.
Posting the MP4 on social media
- Instagram: post it as a Reel or a feed video; repeated 3–5 times, a short loop feels natural.
- TikTok: upload it and add a sound from TikTok's library.
- X and LinkedIn: both accept MP4; short clips autoplay in the feed.
- WhatsApp: send it as a video; on the other side it plays inline.
Using the MP4 in slides
In PowerPoint, insert it with Insert › Video › This Device, then set it to Play automatically and Loop until stopped in the playback options — the clip then behaves just like the GIF, at a fraction of the file size, which keeps presentations quick to open and share.
Converting back
To turn a video into a GIF instead — choosing the moment, length and size — use Video to GIF.
Privacy
The GIF is converted in your browser with ffmpeg (WebAssembly); it isn't uploaded. The first conversion downloads the video engine (about 30 MB) once.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MP4 loop automatically?
On platforms and players that loop videos, yes. In a normal video player it plays once, which is why the repeat option exists.
Can I convert an animated WebP to MP4?
Convert it to GIF first with WebP to GIF, then to MP4 — or use Video to Animated Image for other formats.
Why is my MP4 bigger than the GIF?
Rarely, tiny GIFs with very few colours can be smaller than any video. Keep the GIF in that case.
Can I convert several GIFs at once?
One at a time; each conversion takes only seconds.
