Turn a video clip into an animated GIF, WebP or APNG

Convert a short MP4 or MOV clip into an animated image that plays anywhere a picture can — in chats, emails, documentation and web pages — with no video player needed.

How to convert a video

  1. Drop an MP4 or MOV file.
  2. Choose a preset: MP4 or MOV to GIF, WebP, or (from MP4) APNG.
  3. Set the frame rate and the maximum width.
  4. Convert, then save the animation.

Which format to choose

  • GIF plays everywhere, but is limited to 256 colours and files grow quickly.
  • Animated WebP keeps full colour at a fraction of the size, and every modern browser shows it.
  • APNG keeps full quality and transparency, at the cost of large files.
  • Around 10–15 frames per second and 480 pixels wide suits most clips; shorter clips give smaller files.

For trimming the clip, adding text or fine control over GIF size, use Video to GIF and the GIF Compressor.

Everything happens in your browser: your video (it is converted by ffmpeg running in the page) is never uploaded to a server, so it stays private and the tool keeps working on a slow connection once the page has loaded.
