How to Send a Long or Large Video on WhatsApp

Video too big for WhatsApp? Compress it to 16 MB, split it into parts, or send it as a document to keep full quality. Three ways that work, step by step.

There are three good ways to send a video that WhatsApp won't take or squashes badly: compress it to fit the media limit (16 MB is the long-standing figure on many phones) with Compress Video to Size; split it into parts with the Video Splitter; or send it as a document, which keeps full quality for files up to 2 GB.

Option 1: compress it to fit

Best when the recipient will watch it in the chat.

  1. Open Compress Video to Size and add the video.
  2. Under Get it under, choose 16 MB (the WhatsApp preset).
  3. Press Compress to 16 MB. The tool picks the resolution and bitrate so the file lands just under the limit, encoding twice for accuracy.
  4. Download the file and send it in WhatsApp as a normal video.

Because you've already compressed it carefully, WhatsApp's own compression has little left to do β€” the result usually looks better than letting WhatsApp squash a huge file.

Option 2: split it into parts

Best for long videos you want to keep sharp β€” a school concert, a talk.

  1. Open the Video Splitter.
  2. Choose Into a number of parts, or At times I choose to cut at natural breaks.
  3. Choose Fast β€” original quality to keep every part identical in quality.
  4. Split, download the parts, and send them in order. Number them in the message ("1/3", "2/3", "3/3").

Each part still has to fit WhatsApp's limit; if they're too big, compress each one.

Option 3: send as a document

Best when quality matters most and the recipient will save the file.

  • iPhone: in a chat, tap + β€Ί Document, then choose the video from Files (save it from Photos to Files first: Share β€Ί Save to Files).
  • Android: tap the paperclip β€Ί Document, then pick the video.

Documents up to 2 GB are sent untouched β€” no compression at all. The recipient sees a file icon instead of a preview and taps it to download and play.

Which should I choose?

A short clip to watch in the chatCompress to 16 MB
A long video to watch in the chatSplit into parts

A slow or expensive connectionCompress (smallest file)

Trim before anything else

Most long videos contain parts nobody needs. Cutting the start and end with the Video Cutter makes every option better: smaller files, sharper results, less waiting.

About WhatsApp's limits

WhatsApp doesn't publish one fixed media limit for every phone and version, and it compresses videos sent as media to save data. "HD" sending options on recent versions keep more quality but still compress. If WhatsApp says a video is too long or too big, it may also offer to trim it β€” fine for one clip, but you lose control over what's cut.

Privacy

The compressing and splitting happen in your browser β€” your video isn't uploaded to iPixHub.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send a 10-minute video?

Yes: as a document in full quality, in parts, or compressed to 16 MB at a low resolution. For watching in the chat, splitting looks best.

Why does my video look blurry after sending?

WhatsApp compresses videos sent as media. Send as a document to avoid that.

Does this work for WhatsApp Status?

Status has its own length limit per clip β€” see the guide to posting a long video on WhatsApp Status.
