How to Reverse a GIF (Play It Backwards)

Play an animated GIF backwards, or make it bounce forwards and back like a boomerang. Frame timing and transparency are kept. Free, in your browser, no upload.

To reverse a GIF, open the GIF Reverser, add the GIF, and keep Play: Backwards selected — the preview plays it in reverse straight away. Press Reverse GIF and download it. For a loop that bounces forwards and back, choose Forwards, then backwards instead.

Reverse a GIF step by step

  1. Open the GIF Reverser.
  2. Add the GIF — an animated WebP or PNG works too — or paste a direct link to a GIF.
  3. Under Play, choose:
    • Backwards — the frames in reverse order.
    • Forwards, then backwards — a boomerang.
  4. Watch the preview, press Reverse GIF (or Make boomerang), and download it.

Fun things to reverse

  • Reaction GIFs — an eye-roll that un-rolls, a slammed laptop that opens itself.
  • Water and pouring — drinks that flow back into the glass.
  • Explosions and smashes — everything reassembles.
  • Jumps and dives — people flying out of pools.
  • Drawing and writing — words that un-write themselves.
  • Loading animations that spin the other way.

Boomerang: the loop that always works

Most GIFs jump from the last frame back to the first. Unless the animation happens to end where it began, that jump is visible. A boomerang plays forwards and then backwards, so the motion reverses smoothly and never jumps. The reverser doesn't repeat the turning-point frames, so the bounce doesn't stutter. The boomerang is about twice as long as the original.

For a boomerang made from a video, use the Boomerang GIF maker, which also lets you pick the clip and speed.

Timing and transparency

Each frame keeps its own delay, so a GIF with a long pause at the end will pause at the start once reversed. If that's not what you want, adjust individual frame timings with the GIF Frame Editor. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent.

Combine with speed

Reversed motion often looks best a little slower — it gives the brain time to notice something's off. Try 0.75× with the GIF Speed Changer after reversing.

Reversing videos

For a video clip — with sound reversed too, or silent — use Reverse Video, which also offers a boomerang option. Then turn the result into a GIF with Video to GIF if you need one.

Making a reversed GIF convincing

The best reversed GIFs hide that they're reversed until the moment of surprise. Choose clips where:

  • Gravity is involved — falling, pouring, throwing. Reversed, these break the rules in an obvious, funny way.
  • Something is destroyed — a tower of cups, a cake, a sandcastle. Reversed, it rebuilds itself.
  • The start looks normal — so the viewer doesn't notice until the action begins.

Trim the clip so it starts just before the action with Cut GIF, so the reveal comes quickly.

Sharing reversed GIFs

GIFs play in messaging apps, Discord, Slack, forums and email. Platforms that prefer video (Instagram, TikTok) need an MP4 — convert with GIF to MP4 and repeat it a few times so it lasts long enough.

Privacy

The GIF is reversed in your browser; nothing is uploaded, and there's no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

Will the file get bigger?

Reversing keeps the same number of frames, so the size stays about the same. A boomerang has nearly twice the frames, so it's roughly twice the size.

Can I reverse just part of a GIF?

Cut out the part with Cut GIF, reverse it, and combine the pieces in order with Merge GIFs.

Why does my reversed GIF pause at the start?

The original paused at the end. Lower that frame's delay with the frame editor.
