Change the speed of a GIF

Calm down a frantic GIF so people can follow it, or speed up a slow one so it gets to the point.

How to change GIF speed

  1. Add the GIF, or paste a direct link to one.
  2. Choose a speed: 0.25×, 0.5× or 0.75× to slow it down; 1.5×, 2×, 3× or 4× to speed it up. The new length is shown.
  3. Watch the preview, press Change speed and download the GIF.

Why some frames are skipped when speeding up

A GIF stores each frame’s delay in hundredths of a second, and browsers treat delays under 0.02 s as 0.1 s — which would make a sped-up GIF play slower. So when frames would get that short, neighbouring frames are combined (some are skipped) and the GIF really plays at the speed you chose. The tool tells you how many.

Good to know

  • Slowing down shows each frame for longer; it can’t add in-between frames.
  • To shorten a GIF instead, use Cut GIF; to play it backwards, the GIF Reverser.

Your GIF never leaves your device: it is decoded and rebuilt in your browser.
