To record your voice without an app, open the Voice Recorder, allow the microphone, click Start recording, and speak. A live level meter shows your volume; pause and resume whenever you like, then stop and download the recording as an MP3 or WAV file. The audio is recorded and converted on your device โ nothing is uploaded.
Record your voice step by step
- Open the Voice Recorder in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
- Allow the browser to use your microphone when it asks.
- For speech, turn on Clean up my voice โ it uses the browser's noise suppression and echo cancellation. For music, leave it off.
- Click Start recording and speak. Watch the level meter.
- Pause and resume as you go; stop when you're done.
- Download as MP3 (smaller, plays everywhere) or WAV (uncompressed, best for editing).
Getting a clear recording
- Distance: about a hand's width from a headset microphone, or 20โ30 cm from a laptop or desk microphone.
- Level: keep the meter mostly in the green. If it keeps hitting the end, move back โ distorted audio can't be fixed later.
- Room: soft furnishings absorb echo. A small room with curtains, a sofa or a wardrobe full of clothes sounds far better than a bare kitchen.
- Background noise: close windows, turn off fans, and silence your phone.
- Microphone: a USB microphone or even phone earphones with a mic usually beat a laptop's built-in microphone.
Uses
- Voice notes and memos you want to keep as files.
- Podcast episodes and segments, recorded in takes.
- Job interview and language exam practice โ record your answers and listen back.
- Voice-overs for presentations and videos.
- Song ideas and practice sessions (with clean-up turned off).
- Audio for a video: record a voice-over and add it to a clip with Add Audio to Video.
Editing your recording
- Cut out mistakes or split it into parts with the Audio Splitter.
- Join several takes into one file with the Audio Joiner.
- Remove hiss, hum or room noise with the Audio Noise Reducer.
- Convert to another format โ M4A, OGG, FLAC โ with the Audio Converter.
Recording in takes
Long recordings rarely go perfectly in one go. Instead of starting over after a slip, pause, take a breath, and resume from the start of the sentence. Afterwards, cut the stumbles out with the splitter. For a podcast, record each segment as a separate take with Record another take and join them at the end.
MP3 or WAV?
| MP3 | WAV | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Small (about 1 MB a minute) | Large (about 10 MB a minute) |
| Quality | Excellent for speech | Perfect, uncompressed |
| Best for | Sharing, uploading, podcasts | Editing, music, archiving |
If you'll edit the recording further, download WAV and convert to MP3 at the end.
On a phone
The recorder works in mobile browsers too. On iPhone, the built-in Voice Memos app is also excellent; the browser recorder is useful when you need an MP3 file directly, or you're on a computer.
Frequently asked questions
Is my recording uploaded?
No. It's recorded and converted in your browser and stays on your device.
Is there a time limit?
No fixed limit. Very long recordings use more memory; for hour-long sessions, record in parts.
Why does the browser ask for microphone permission?
Browsers never let websites listen without asking. You can revoke the permission any time in the browser's site settings.
Can I record what's playing on my computer?
The Voice Recorder records your microphone. To capture sound from a video or a call, use the Screen Recorder with tab audio, then Extract Audio.
