To print several PDF pages on one sheet of paper, open N-up PDF, add the PDF, choose how many pages per sheet — 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16 — and the paper size, then download and print the new file as usual. The pages are shrunk and arranged in a grid, left to right and top to bottom, with an optional thin border around each.

Make an N-up PDF

  1. Open N-up PDF and add your PDF.
  2. Choose pages per sheet: 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16.
  3. Choose the sheet size: A4, Letter, A3 or Legal — whatever is in your printer.
  4. Tick Thin border around pages if you want each page outlined (helpful for slides and documents with little margin).
  5. Download the new PDF and print it at 100% scale.

The sheet is automatically turned to whichever orientation lets the pages be biggest — 2 per sheet prints on landscape paper, 4 per sheet on portrait, and so on.

How many pages per sheet?

Pages per sheetEach page is roughlyGood for
270% of normal sizeReading comfortably, books, reports
450%Slides, articles, proofreading
640%Slide handouts, reference material
8–933%Overviews, thumbnails of a long document
1625%Checking layout and page order, not reading

Text at 50% is still readable for most documents; below that, it's mainly useful for slides with large text or for getting an overview.

Why not just use the print dialog?

Many print dialogs have a "pages per sheet" setting, and for a quick printout at home it's fine. Making an N-up PDF is better when:

  • Someone else is printing — a print shop, a colleague, a school printer — and you can't rely on their settings.
  • You print the same thing often, like a weekly handout.
  • Your printer's dialog doesn't offer it, which is common on phones and tablets.
  • You want borders, a specific paper size, or the same layout every time.
  • You want to share a compact version as a PDF rather than on paper.

Get the most out of each sheet

  • Trim wide margins first. Pages with big white margins get even smaller when shrunk. Crop them with Crop PDF, then make the N-up file — the content fills more of each slot.
  • Combine documents first. To print several documents compactly, join them with the PDF Merger, then make one N-up file.
  • Mixed page sizes? If your PDF mixes A4 pages and receipts, put everything on one page size first with Resize PDF so the grid looks even.
  • Print double-sided as well, and four pages per sheet becomes eight pages per sheet of paper.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% / actual size, not "fit to page" — the N-up file is already the size of your paper.
  • If your printer can't print right to the edge, the small margins built into the layout keep the outer pages from being clipped.
  • For lecture slides, see how to print slides as handouts for layouts with space for notes.

Frequently asked questions

Does it reduce the text quality?

No. Text stays as vector text — it's scaled, not turned into an image — so it prints crisply even at small sizes.

Can I choose the order of pages?

Pages run left to right, then top to bottom, in document order. To change the order, rearrange the PDF first with Rearrange PDF Pages.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The layout is made in your browser.
