How to Print Lecture Slides as Handouts (PDF)
Turn a slide deck PDF into compact handouts — 2, 4, 6 or 9 slides per page — to study, take notes on or hand out, without wasting a sheet per slide.

Printing a 60-slide lecture one slide per page wastes 60 sheets of paper. To print slides as handouts, open N-up PDF, add the slide deck PDF, choose 4 or 6 slides per sheet, and print the result. Each slide becomes a small panel on the page, outlined with a thin border, and your 60 slides fit on 10 to 15 sheets.
Make handouts from a slide PDF
- Export your slides as a PDF if they aren't one already: in PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides it's File › Export or Download › PDF. Lecture slides from a course portal are usually PDFs already.
- Open N-up PDF and add the PDF.
- Choose 4 or 6 slides per sheet (see the table below).
- Pick your paper size and keep Thin border around pages ticked so each slide has a clear outline.
- Download and print at 100% scale.
Which layout for which purpose?
| Slides per sheet | Best for |
|---|---|
| 2 | Slides with small text or detailed diagrams; space to write between them |
| 4 | Studying and revision — the most readable compact layout |
| 6 | Standard handouts for an audience |
| 9 | Revision overviews, image-heavy decks |
| 16 | Checking the order of a whole deck at a glance |
Slides are landscape, so with 2 per sheet they sit one above the other on a portrait page, leaving room on the side margins for notes; with 4 and more they fill a grid.
Space for notes
PowerPoint's own handout layout with lines for notes is only available from the original .pptx file. When all you have is a PDF, these approaches work well:
- 2 per sheet leaves the widest margins for handwritten notes.
- Print double-sided and use the back of each sheet for notes on the slides in front.
- Take notes digitally: open the N-up PDF on a tablet in a note-taking app and write beside the slides.
Tidy the deck first
- Remove slides you don't need — title slides, "questions?" slides, section dividers — with Split PDF or by keeping only certain pages.
- Crop white borders with Crop PDF if the PDF export put a wide white frame around each slide; the slides then fill more of each panel.
- Combine several lectures into one revision pack with the PDF Merger, then make one handout file for the whole module.
Saving ink
Slides often have dark backgrounds that eat printer ink. If yours do:
- Check whether your lecturer provides a "print version" with a white background.
- In PowerPoint or Google Slides, export with a light theme or in grayscale before converting to PDF.
- Use your printer's draft or toner-saving mode for revision copies.
For presenters
If you're the one presenting, handouts help your audience follow along and keep notes in one place. Six per sheet is the classic layout for meetings and conferences; add slide numbers in your deck so people can refer back during questions.
Frequently asked questions
Will small text on slides be readable?
At 4 per sheet, yes for most slides. Diagrams with tiny labels may need 2 per sheet. Text stays sharp because it isn't converted into an image.
Can I do this on a phone or tablet?
Yes — the tool works in mobile browsers, and you can print the downloaded PDF from your phone's share menu or send it to a printer.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. The handouts are created in your browser.
