How to Merge PDFs on iPhone (Free, No App Needed)
Combine several PDFs into one on your iPhone in Safari: add the files, put them in order, download. No app or sign-up, and the files stay on your phone.

You can merge PDFs on an iPhone without installing anything: open the PDF Merger in Safari, add the PDFs from the Files app, put them in the order you want, and download one combined file. It takes about a minute, it's free, and the files are combined on your phone rather than uploaded to a server.
The quick way: merge PDFs in Safari
- Open the PDF Merger in Safari (Chrome and other browsers on iPhone work the same way).
- Tap the box that says Click, drop or paste PDF files. If iOS asks where the files are, choose Choose Files.
- In the Files picker, tap Select, tap each PDF you want, then tap Open. You can add more files later, so don't worry about getting everything at once.
- Check the list. Each file shows its size and number of pages. Use the arrows to move a file up or down, or tap Sort by file name if your files are numbered.
- Tap Merge. When it's done you'll see the total page count.
- Tap Download merged PDF and confirm the download.
That's it — the combined document is called merged.pdf and sits in your Downloads folder.
Getting PDFs from Mail, WhatsApp or iCloud into Files
The file picker shows what's in the Files app, so a PDF that is still an email attachment or a chat message needs saving first:
- Mail: touch and hold the attachment (or open it), tap the Share button, then Save to Files.
- WhatsApp, Messages and other apps: open the document, tap Share, then Save to Files.
- iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive: these usually appear in the Files picker under Browse, so you can pick from them directly.
Save everything into one folder, such as Downloads or a new folder for the job. It makes picking the files in one go much easier.
Where the merged PDF is saved
Safari puts downloads in the Downloads folder in the Files app — either in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, depending on your settings. While Safari is open you can also tap the download icon in the address bar to see it.
From there you can open it, tap Share to send it by email or message, or rename it: touch and hold the file and choose Rename. If you'd like downloads to go somewhere else, look for Downloads in Safari's section of the Settings app.
The built-in alternative: Create PDF in the Files app
iPhones can also combine files on their own. In the Files app, tap Select, choose the PDFs (images work too), tap the More button (the circle with three dots) and choose Create PDF.
It's handy for a quick job, but you get little control: you can't see page counts or rearrange the files before they're combined, and it's easy to end up with pages in the wrong order. The PDF Merger shows every file and its page count first and lets you reorder them, which matters for anything you're submitting — a visa application, an invoice with receipts, or a signed contract with its appendix.
Tips for a tidy merged PDF
- Number your files before you start (01 Cover, 02 Letter, 03 Receipts…). Then one tap on Sort by file name puts them in order.
- Remove pages you don't need afterwards — blank scanned pages, duplicate covers — with Remove PDF Pages.
- Fix the order of individual pages with Rearrange PDF Pages. The merger orders whole files; that tool moves single pages.
- Turn sideways scans upright with Rotate PDF.
- Too big to email? Run the result through Compress PDF, which shows the new size before you download.
- Got photos of documents instead of PDFs? Turn them into a PDF with Image to PDF first, then merge.
If a file won't merge
A file marked Password-protected can't be combined until the password is removed. If you know the password, unlock it with Unlock PDF and add the unlocked copy instead. A file marked Not a readable PDF is damaged or isn't really a PDF — try downloading it again, or remove it and merge the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to merge confidential documents this way?
The merging runs in Safari on your iPhone. Your PDFs aren't uploaded to a server, so contracts, bank statements and ID documents stay on your device. The page works on a slow connection too, once it has loaded.
How many PDFs can I combine?
There's no fixed limit on the number of files. Very large documents — hundreds of pages of scans — depend on how much memory your iPhone has; if a big merge fails, combine the files in two batches and then merge the two results.
Does it work on iPad and Android?
Yes. On iPad the steps are identical. On Android, open the page in Chrome, tap the box, and pick your PDFs from the file picker; the merged file goes to your Downloads folder. On a computer you can also drag files straight onto the page.
Will the merged PDF lose quality?
No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, so text stays sharp and searchable, and images aren't re-compressed.
