How to Merge PDF Files on Android (No App)

Combine PDFs on an Android phone in Chrome: pick the files, set the order, download one PDF. Includes tips for picking several files and finding the download.

Android doesn't come with a way to merge PDFs — neither the Files app nor Google Drive can combine two documents into one. Instead of installing an app full of ads, open the PDF Merger in Chrome: pick your PDFs, put them in order and download a single combined file. The merging runs on your phone, so the documents aren't uploaded.

Step by step in Chrome

  1. Open the PDF Merger in Chrome (Samsung Internet, Firefox and Edge work too).
  2. Tap the box Click, drop or paste PDF files. Android opens its file picker.
  3. Find your PDFs — usually under Downloads, or in the menu (☰) under Drive or your phone's storage.
  4. Long-press the first PDF to start selecting, tap the others, then tap Select (or Open, depending on your phone).
  5. Check the list. Each file shows its size and pages; use the arrows to reorder, or tap Sort by file name.
  6. Tap Merge, then Download merged PDF.

If you can only pick one file at a time

Some phones' file pickers only allow one file per selection. That's fine: pick one PDF, then tap the box again — it now says Add more PDFs — and pick the next. The list keeps everything you've added, and you can reorder at the end.

Where to find the merged PDF

The file is called merged.pdf and goes to your Downloads folder. Chrome shows a "Download complete" message with an Open button; later you can find it in Chrome under ⋮ › Downloads, or in your phone's Files app under Downloads.

To give it a better name, open your Files app, long-press the file and choose Rename.

Getting PDFs from WhatsApp, Gmail and Drive

  • Gmail: open the email and tap the download icon on the attachment. It's saved to Downloads.
  • WhatsApp: documents you've received are saved on your phone; open the document and use ⋮ › Share to save it to Files or Drive if you can't find it in the picker.
  • Google Drive: in the file picker, open the menu (☰) and choose Drive to pick files straight from Drive.

Paper documents and photos

If your "documents" are photos of paper forms or receipts, turn them into a PDF first with Image to PDF, then merge them with your other PDFs. Google Drive's scan button and many camera apps can also save scans as PDFs directly.

Common problems

A file says "Password-protected"

Locked PDFs — bank statements often are — can't be merged until the password is removed. If you know it, use Unlock PDF, then add the unlocked file.

The merged PDF is too big to send

Try Compress PDF. If the file is mostly phone photos, it may not shrink much; in that case take the photos again at a lower resolution, or send the document in two parts.

The pages are in the wrong order inside the PDF

The merger keeps each file's own page order. To move single pages, open the merged file in Rearrange PDF Pages.

The phone slows down with huge files

Merging hundreds of scanned pages uses a lot of memory. Combine them in smaller batches, then merge the batches.

On a tablet or Chromebook

The steps are the same on an Android tablet. On a Chromebook you can also drag PDFs from the Files app straight onto the drop box, which is the quickest way to add a whole folder of documents at once; the merged file appears in the Files app under Downloads.

Is it really free and private?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no watermark, and the PDFs are processed in Chrome on your phone rather than uploaded to a server. Once the page has loaded, merging even works on a weak mobile connection.
