Make a scatter plot online

A scatter plot shows whether two measurements move together — height and weight, advertising and sales, study time and grades. Paste pairs of numbers and the points appear as you type, with a trend line that puts the relationship into numbers.

How to make a scatter plot

  1. Paste or type one row per point: x, y — or a label first (label, x, y). Copy straight from Excel or Google Sheets, or type it with commas.
  2. A first row of names labels the axes; a last column of group names colours the points by group, with a legend.
  3. Turn on the trend line, the point labels, or axes that start at zero, and set the point size and opacity.
  4. Set the title, colours and image size, then download a PNG, JPG or SVG, or copy the image.

Reading a scatter plot

  • Points rising from left to right suggest a positive relationship; falling, a negative one. A cloud with no direction suggests no linear relationship.
  • The trend line is the least-squares straight line through the points. Its equation, y = ax + b, predicts y from x, and R² (from 0 to 1) shows how closely the points follow it.
  • A relationship isn’t proof that one thing causes the other.
  • To show a third value as the size of each point, use the Bubble Chart Maker; for values over time, the Line Chart Maker.
