How to Make a Meme from Any Picture (Free)

Add classic meme captions — white capitals with a black outline — to any photo or screenshot, with long text wrapping automatically. No watermark, no app.

To make a meme, open the Meme Generator, add a picture, type the Top text and Bottom text, adjust the size, and click Make meme to download it. The captions use the classic meme style — bold white capitals with a thick black outline — which stays readable on any picture, light or dark. Long captions wrap onto extra lines automatically, and there's no watermark.

Make a meme step by step

  1. Open the Meme Generator.
  2. Add a picture: a photo, a screenshot, or a reaction image you've saved.
  3. Type the Top text — usually the set-up.
  4. Type the Bottom text — usually the punchline.
  5. Adjust the Text size so the captions fit without covering faces.
  6. Click Make meme, then Download meme.

Why memes look the way they do

The classic style isn't an accident:

  • Capital letters in a condensed, heavy typeface (Impact is the traditional font) are readable at small sizes on a phone.
  • White fill with a black outline shows up on any background — sky, faces, dark rooms.
  • Top and bottom placement keeps the middle of the picture, where the action usually is, clear.

Writing captions that work

  • Short beats long. Five to eight words per line is plenty.
  • Set-up on top, punchline at the bottom — the reader's eye goes top to bottom.
  • Let the picture do half the work. The caption should add something, not describe what we can see.
  • Leave out the bottom text if the joke works in one line — a single top caption is a common format too.

Choosing and preparing the picture

  • Crop to the action first with the Image Cropper — memes work best when the subject fills the frame.
  • Square or 4:5 pictures suit Instagram and most chats; very wide pictures make the text tiny on phones.
  • Use your own photos or images you're allowed to use. Well-known meme templates are widely shared, but photos of private people deserve respect — don't turn someone into a joke without their consent.
  • Top-and-bottom: the classic — set-up above, punchline below.
  • Top only: a one-line caption over a reaction image ("Me when the Wi-Fi drops").
  • Labelled pictures: different labels on different parts of a picture. Use Add Text to Image for those, since the text can go anywhere.
  • Screenshot memes: a screenshot of a message or a post, with your reaction as a caption.

Other caption styles

  • Text anywhere, any style: for captions in the middle, in a different colour, with a caption bar, or several labels on one picture, use Add Text to Image.
  • Moving memes: add top and bottom captions to every frame of a GIF with Add Text to GIF.

Sharing your meme

Memes are saved as JPG, which every app accepts — WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Instagram, X and Reddit. For a reaction you'll use often, keep a folder of your best ones on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a watermark?

No. Your meme is downloaded clean.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The meme is made in your browser, and the picture stays on your device.

Why doesn't the font look exactly like Impact on my phone?

The meme style uses Impact where your device has it, and a similar bold condensed font where it doesn't. The white-with-black-outline look is the same either way.

Can I make a meme on my phone?

Yes — it works in Safari and Chrome on phones. Pick a picture from your gallery, type, and save the meme back to your photos.
