How to Upscale an Image Without Losing Quality

Enlarge a small or low-resolution image 2× or 4× with AI that rebuilds detail instead of stretching pixels — for printing, websites and product photos.

Making an image bigger the normal way just stretches its pixels, so it looks soft and blocky. To enlarge without that loss, open the AI Image Upscaler, add the image, choose a Scale factor of 2× or 4×, and download a larger, sharper PNG. The AI rebuilds fine detail, sharpens edges and removes noise and compression artefacts as it enlarges.

Upscale an image step by step

  1. Open the AI Image Upscaler.
  2. Click or drag an image onto the box.
  3. Choose the Scale factor: 2× or 4×.
  4. Wait while the AI processes it, then compare Original and the result.
  5. Download the larger PNG.

Results are capped at 4,096 pixels on the longest side. The free plan includes 2 upscales a day with no account; the image is processed by an AI model (Google Gemini) through iPixHub's server, which doesn't keep a copy.

For shrinking images, normal resizing with the Image Resizer is perfect. For enlarging, AI makes a dramatic difference.

When upscaling helps

  • Printing a small photo larger — a 1,000-pixel image prints well at about 8 cm; at 4× it can print at around 30 cm.
  • Old digital photos from early phones and cameras at low resolution.
  • Product photos supplied too small for a shop's zoom feature.
  • Logos and graphics where only a small version exists (though a vector original is always better).
  • Website hero images that look soft on large, high-resolution screens.
  • Screenshots and video frames you want to use as images.

What upscaling can't do

AI upscaling is impressive, but it isn't magic:

  • It can't recover information that was never there. A face that's 20 pixels wide becomes a plausible face, not necessarily that person's face. Don't use upscaled images as evidence or for identification.
  • Very blurry photos (camera shake, out of focus) get sharper edges but may look artificial. Try the AI Photo Enhancer, which focuses on clarity and lighting.
  • Text in tiny images can come out as invented letters. Check any text carefully.

Old and damaged photos

For scanned prints with scratches, creases and faded colours, start with Old Photo Restoration, which repairs damage, then upscale the restored image if you need it larger.

Tips for the best result

  • Start from the best original you have: the original file rather than a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app, which compresses images.
  • Use 2× when it's enough. 4× gives more pixels but also more room for invented texture.
  • Crop first. If you only need part of a photo, crop it, then upscale — the AI focuses on what matters.
  • Compare at 100% zoom before printing.

Frequently asked questions

Will it make a photo good enough to print as a poster?

It depends on the starting size. A 1,000-pixel photo upscaled 4× (4,000 pixels) prints well at around A3 viewed from a normal distance.

Is it free?

Yes — 2 upscales per day for free, no sign-up needed.

What format is the result?

PNG, which keeps every pixel of the upscaled image. Convert it to JPG with the Image Converter if you need a smaller file.
