How to Remove the Background from a Picture (Free)
Cut out a person, pet or product and remove the background in seconds — get a transparent PNG or put the subject on white. Two free ways, compared.

To remove the background from a picture, open the AI Background Remover, add the photo, and the AI cuts out the subject — a person, a pet, a product — and gives you a transparent PNG. Switch the background to white or another colour with one click if you need a solid backdrop. iPixHub has a second option that runs entirely in your browser; both are explained below.
Remove a background with AI
- Open the AI Background Remover.
- Click or drag an image onto the box — JPG, PNG or WebP.
- Wait a few seconds while the AI separates the subject from the background.
- Compare the Original with the result. Choose a Background: transparent, white, or a custom colour.
- Download the PNG.
The free plan includes 2 background removals a day, with no account. The photo is sent to an AI model (Google Gemini) through iPixHub's server to be processed; iPixHub doesn't keep a copy.
The unlimited, private alternative
The Background Remover uses an AI segmentation model that runs inside your browser: there's no daily limit, and the photo never leaves your device. The first run downloads the model, so it takes a little longer; after that it starts straight away.
Which to use?
| AI Background Remover | Background Remover | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | AI service (server) | Your browser |
| Free use | 2 a day | Unlimited |
| Privacy | Photo sent for processing | Photo stays on your device |
| Best for | Tricky edges, best quality | Everyday cut-outs, batches, private photos |
Try the in-browser tool first; if the edges aren't clean enough — fine hair, fur, see-through objects — use the AI version for that photo.
Getting clean edges
Background removal is easiest when the subject stands out:
- Contrast: a dark subject on a light background (or the reverse) cuts out more cleanly than similar colours.
- Sharp focus: a blurred subject has blurred edges in the cut-out too.
- Simple backgrounds help, though modern AI handles busy ones surprisingly well.
- Hair and fur are the hardest parts — check them at full size before using the image.
- Glass and transparent objects don't cut out well with any tool.
What to do with the cut-out
- Transparent PNG: place the subject on a slide, a website, a poster or a product listing over any colour.
- White background: what most online marketplaces want for product photos — see how to remove backgrounds from product photos.
- A new colour or scene: put the subject on a brand colour with the Background Changer, or generate a whole new realistic scene with the AI Background Generator.
- Stickers and profile pictures: a cut-out person on a coloured circle makes a striking avatar.
Why PNG?
Only some formats can store transparency. PNG (and WebP) can; JPG can't — saving a transparent cut-out as JPG fills the background with white or black. Keep the PNG for anything you'll place on a coloured background.
Common problems
"Part of the subject was removed"
The AI wasn't sure what the subject was — for example, a person holding an object, or two people. Try the other tool, or crop the photo tighter around the subject first.
"There's a halo around the edges"
Light fringes appear when the original background was bright. Placing the cut-out on a light colour hides them; on dark colours, the AI version usually gives cleaner edges.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove the background from several photos?
Yes. The in-browser Background Remover has no daily limit, so it suits batches of photos.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Both tools work in mobile browsers; the in-browser version is slower on older phones.
Is it really free?
Yes — the browser version is unlimited, and the AI version gives 2 free removals a day without an account.
