How to Change a Photo Background to White
Put a person or product on a clean white (or any colour) background for marketplaces, CVs and ID-style photos — automatic, in your browser, no upload.

To give a photo a white background, open the Background Changer, add the photo, pick white from the swatches, and export the image. The AI finds the subject — a person, a product, a pet — removes everything behind it, and fills the background with the colour you chose. It runs in your browser, so the photo isn't uploaded.
Change the background step by step
- Open the Background Changer and add a JPG, PNG or WebP photo.
- Wait while the AI isolates the subject (the first run downloads the model, then it's quick).
- Choose the new background: a swatch such as white, any colour with the custom colour picker, or transparency.
- Check the preview and export the finished image.
Where white backgrounds are expected
- Online marketplaces: Amazon requires a pure white background for main product images, and many other marketplaces and shops recommend one. Pure white is RGB 255, 255, 255 (#ffffff).
- CVs and professional profiles: a clean headshot on white or light grey looks consistent and tidy.
- ID-style photos: many forms ask for a plain white or light background. For official passport and visa photos, also crop to the exact size with the Passport Photo Maker — and check whether your authority accepts edited backgrounds, since some require an original photo taken against a plain wall.
- Team pages and catalogues: the same background on every photo makes a set look professional.
Getting a natural result
- Shoot against a plain, contrasting background if you can: a person in dark clothes in front of a light wall separates cleanly.
- Even lighting avoids dark shadows that the AI might treat as part of the subject.
- Mind the hair. Fine strands against a busy background are the hardest part. Check the edges at full size.
- Shadows: a product floating on pure white can look flat. Marketplaces accept that, but for your own shop a soft shadow looks more natural — the AI Background Generator can place the product in a realistic scene with lighting and shadows.
Colours other than white
- Light grey (#f3f4f6): softer than pure white for headshots.
- Brand colours: for team photos or product cards that match your website.
- Transparent: to place the subject on anything later — see how to make an image background transparent.
When the cut-out isn't clean enough
For difficult photos — wispy hair, fur, similar colours in subject and background — try the Background Remover first to compare, or the AI Background Remover, which handles tricky edges well (2 free a day; the photo is processed by an AI service). Then add the white background to its transparent result.
Check before you use it
Look at the result at full size, especially around hair, ears and the edges of clothing. A thin leftover outline of the old background is easiest to spot against white. If you see one, try a different photo of the same subject — a cleaner original almost always beats retouching the cut-out.
Batch tips for product photos
Photographing a range of products?
- Shoot them all in the same place with the same lighting and camera distance.
- Change the backgrounds one by one — the in-browser tool has no daily limit.
- Make them a consistent size afterwards with the Bulk Converter & Resizer.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Both the cut-out and the new background are done in your browser.
Will the result be pure white?
Yes — the background is filled with exactly the colour you pick, so white is #ffffff.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes, though the AI runs faster on a computer, and the first run downloads the model.
