Many PDF forms aren't fillable — they're just pages with lines and boxes, made to be printed and filled in by hand. You can still type on them: open Add Text to PDF, add the PDF, click where you want to write, and type. Choose the font, size and colour, drag each piece of text into place, and download the completed PDF.
How to type on a PDF
- Open Add Text to PDF and add your PDF.
- Make sure the Text tool is selected.
- Click on the page where the text should go — next to "Name:", on a line, in a box — and type.
- Set the font (Helvetica, Times or Courier), the size and the colour to match the form.
- Drag the handle on a text box to nudge it into position; switch to the Move tool to reposition things without creating new boxes.
- Repeat for every field, then click Download PDF.
Getting it to look neat
- Match the size to the form. Most forms are printed in 10–12 point text; use the same so your answers look natural.
- Line up on the baseline. Place your text so it sits just above the printed line, not on top of it. Zoom your browser in for precise placement.
- Use capitals where asked. Forms often say "BLOCK CAPITALS". Courier, a typewriter font, fits neatly into boxed fields with one letter per box if you add spaces.
- Tick boxes with an X. Type a capital X in the box; adjust the size until it fits inside.
- Dates: type them in the format the form asks for — 11/10/2026 means different things in different countries.
Check whether it's fillable first
Some PDFs have real form fields even though they look plain. If yours does, Fill PDF Form is quicker: it lists every field, and the recipient's software can read the answers. Add Text to PDF is the method for forms without fields — the tool you use here places text on the page itself, which works with every PDF.
Adding a signature
Typed text isn't a signature. Once the form is filled, open it in Sign PDF to draw, type or upload your signature and put it on the signature line. Fill first, sign last.
Correcting or hiding existing text
The White-out tool draws a box that covers what's underneath — useful for fixing a mistake on a form you filled in earlier, or covering a pre-printed date you need to change. Drag a rectangle over the area, then type the new text on top. See how to change text in a PDF for a full walkthrough.
White-out only covers things visually. Anyone can remove the box or copy the text underneath with a PDF editor, so never use it to hide sensitive information — for that, use Redact PDF, which removes the text for real.
Making your answers permanent
The text you add is placed onto the page, but some PDF editors can still select and move it. To lock everything in, run the finished file through Flatten PDF before sending it.
Frequently asked questions
Which languages can I type?
The standard PDF fonts cover English and Western European languages, including accented letters such as é, ü and ñ. Other alphabets can't be typed here.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap where you want to write and type with the on-screen keyboard. On small screens, zoom in for accurate placement, or turn the phone sideways.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No — everything happens in your browser, so the personal details you type stay on your device.
Can I edit the original text of the PDF?
Not directly. You can cover it with white-out and type replacement text on top, which works well for small corrections.
